Can You Wear Jewellery to the Gym? What to Keep On and Take Off
The advice to take all jewellery off before a workout is decades old and built around jewellery that genuinely couldn't handle sweat, movement, or a shower straight after. A lot of that advice no longer applies — but not all of it, and knowing the difference matters more than blanket rules either way.
Sweat is the real issue, not exercise itself
It's not the movement that damages jewellery at the gym — it's the sweat, and the salt within it, sitting against plated metal for an extended period. This is the same tarnishing mechanism as swimming, just slower and less obvious, which is why a piece that seems fine after one workout can start showing wear after weeks of daily sessions if the metal underneath isn't built to handle it.
What's genuinely fine to keep on
Studs, small hoops, and rings on waterproof, tarnish-resistant metal are generally fine through most cardio and strength sessions — they're not what's actually at risk, and taking them off and on daily is more hassle than the risk justifies. Necklaces are the borderline case: fine for most training, but worth removing for anything involving heavy chest-level equipment where a chain could catch or swing into the way.
What to actually remove
Dangly earrings and long pendants around any equipment with moving parts — not because of sweat, but because of genuine catch risk. Anything with an open clasp or a delicate setting during heavy lifting, where grip and friction on the hands specifically can stress a piece more than normal daily wear does. This is a mechanical safety consideration, separate from the tarnishing question entirely.
The actual rule of thumb
If a piece is waterproof and tarnish-resistant and won't physically catch on equipment, there's no real reason to take it off for a workout — the old blanket advice was really a workaround for jewellery that couldn't handle sweat, not a rule about exercise itself. Once the metal problem is solved, most of the caution becomes unnecessary.
Every piece in Golden Essentials is built to handle sweat and daily wear without a second thought — see our care guide for more on what each piece can handle.
