Is Gold-Plated Jewellery Hypoallergenic? What Sensitive Skin Needs to Know

August 22, 2026 · Golden Hour

If a ring or a pair of earrings has ever left your skin red, itchy, or oddly green, you already know the answer to "does jewellery matter" is yes. But the follow-up question — is gold-plated jewellery actually safe, or is it just gold-coloured trouble — depends entirely on what's underneath the plating, which most product listings never mention.

What actually causes the reaction

Most jewellery-related skin reactions aren't caused by gold at all — they're caused by nickel, a common, cheap alloy metal used in a huge amount of costume and fast-fashion jewellery. Nickel allergy is one of the most common contact allergies there is, and it doesn't care how thin or thick the gold layer on top is; if there's nickel in the base metal, it can still reach skin, especially once the plating starts to thin.

Why the base metal is the real question

This is why "is gold-plated jewellery hypoallergenic" doesn't have one universal answer — it depends on what's plated. Gold-plated brass or gold-plated nickel-alloy can absolutely cause a reaction. Gold-plated stainless steel is a different story: surgical-grade stainless steel is one of the most skin-safe base metals available, low in the reactive elements that trigger most contact allergies, and it's what's underneath every piece we make. The plating is the finish; the steel is what your skin is actually touching most of the time as the gold layer naturally wears.

What sensitive skin should look for

Three things, regardless of brand: what the base metal actually is (not just "gold-plated," which describes the finish, not the core), whether it's labelled nickel-free specifically, and how the piece behaves after a full day of wear — heat and sweat make reactions more likely, so an earring that's fine for an hour might not be fine for eight. If a listing doesn't say what's underneath the plating, that's usually worth asking before buying, not after a reaction.

Sensitive skin doesn't mean giving up on gold

The instinct after a bad reaction is often to swear off plated jewellery entirely and go back to solid gold, which solves the problem but at a cost most people don't need to pay. Gold-plated stainless steel gives you the same everyday safety without the solid-gold price tag — the sensitivity issue was never really about the gold on top, it was about what was underneath it.
