The Best Jewellery for Working Out: A Buyer's Guide

August 22, 2026 · Golden Hour

Buying jewellery specifically to work out in is a different brief than buying jewellery generally — the usual questions about style and occasion matter less than two much more practical ones: will it survive the sweat, and will it stay out of the way. Here's what actually matters, in order.

Material comes before style, every time

Whatever the piece looks like, none of it matters if the base metal reacts with sweat. Stainless steel is the material to look for underneath any plating — it doesn't react with the salt and acid in sweat the way brass or copper does, which is the actual reason some jewellery survives a gym routine and other jewellery, even from the same price bracket, doesn't. Check this before anything else, including how much you like the design.

Fit and shape matter almost as much

A workout piece needs to sit close to the body and stay put — nothing that swings, dangles, or has enough movement to catch on equipment, a mat, or your own hands mid-set. Snug-fitting rings, small studs or huggie hoops, and necklaces short enough to stay flat against the collarbone all clear this bar easily. Anything designed to move and catch the light — which is usually exactly what makes a piece beautiful in a normal setting — is the wrong shape for a workout.

Category by category

Rings: thin bands or simple stacking rings, sized snugly enough that they don't spin or catch during grip work. Earrings: studs and small huggies over anything dangly — no exceptions for high-impact training. Necklaces: short, close-fitting chains for anything with equipment or floor work; skip necklaces entirely for heavy lifting where a chain could catch. Bracelets: slim bangles or chains that sit flat against the wrist, avoided entirely for anything grip-intensive like rock climbing or heavy barbell work.

What to skip entirely, regardless of material

Statement pieces, anything with an open clasp under regular tension, and jewellery with delicate settings or stones that could take an impact — these are risks that better materials don't solve, because the issue is mechanical, not chemical. Save these for after the workout, not during it.

The actual shortlist

A pair of small studs or huggies, one or two thin stacking rings, and a short, flat chain — all in waterproof, tarnish-resistant metal. That's genuinely enough to cover most workouts without a second thought, and simple enough to keep on for the rest of the day afterward.
