Which Finger Should You Wear a Ring On? What Each One Means

There's no law about which finger a ring goes on. But each finger has picked up its own associations over the centuries, and knowing them helps you choose where a ring will look best and what it might say to the people who notice it.

Thumb: independence

A thumb ring is traditionally linked with independence, willpower and self-expression. It's the least common placement, which is exactly why it gets noticed. Wide or chunky bands suit the thumb best, because a fine ring can look lost there.

Try: the Horizon Ring, a wide, high-shine band. Thumbs need a larger size, so check our ring size guide first.

Index finger: confidence

Historically, the index finger was where people of status wore signet rings and seals. Today, it's associated with confidence and leadership. It's also the most fashion-forward placement right now, because a bold ring here leads the whole hand.

Try: the Sun Serpent Ring, a coiled gold snake made to be worn on the index finger.

Middle finger: balance

The middle finger sits at the centre of the hand and is often linked with balance and responsibility. A ring here is neutral. It carries no romantic meaning, which makes it a good home for a statement piece.

Try: the Molten Ring or the Heatwave Ring. Both are sculptural enough to own the centre of your hand.

Ring finger: love and commitment

In Australia, the UK and the US, engagement and wedding rings go on the ring finger of the left hand. The tradition traces back to the old belief in a vein running directly from that finger to the heart. In several other countries, including Germany, Russia and Norway, wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand.

If you're not engaged, the left ring finger is still yours to use, but be aware some people will read it a certain way. The right ring finger is a popular spot for promise rings, self-gifted rings and anything with a romantic meaning that isn't a proposal.

Try: the Forever Ring, our toi et moi design, on the right hand. Read what toi et moi means.

Little finger: self-expression

The pinky has long been home to signet rings and is associated with communication and individuality. A pinky ring adds an unexpected finishing touch to a stack.

Try: a fine band like the Whisper Ring in a smaller size.

Left hand or right hand?

There's an old idea that your dominant hand shows who you are and your other hand shows who you were born to be. Practically speaking, rings on your dominant hand take more knocks. If you wear rings while you work, train or swim, choose pieces that can handle it. Every Golden Hour ring is 18k gold PVD-plated over 316L stainless steel, so it's waterproof and tarnish-resistant.

The modern rule

Wear rings wherever you like them. The meanings are there if you want them. If you don't, the only rule is balance: spread rings across both hands and leave some fingers bare so each piece can be seen. Read our guide to stacking rings for more.
