Necklace Length Guide: What Each Length Actually Looks Like
Necklace length is the one measurement people consistently skip when buying online, then regret the moment the piece arrives — either sitting higher than expected against the collarbone or disappearing under a neckline it was supposed to sit above. Unlike a ring, there's no sizing to get wrong; there's just knowing which number does what on an actual body.
The standard lengths, in practice
14–16 inches sits as a choker, right at the base of the neck — works best on its own or as the top layer in a stack, and tends to look best with an open neckline. 18 inches is the true everyday length, sitting just at or slightly below the collarbone, which is why it's the most commonly sold length across almost every jewellery brand. 20–24 inches drops to the top of the chest, working well over higher necklines like crewnecks and turtlenecks. Anything past 24 inches moves into pendant or layering territory, sitting low enough to need its own space rather than competing with a collar.
Why 18 inches is the safest default
If you're buying for someone else, or unsure, 18 inches is the length least likely to disappoint — it sits in a genuinely flattering spot on most necklines and body types, and it's short enough to layer under a slightly longer piece if the person likes wearing multiples. It's the equivalent of a medium in clothing sizing: not always the perfect fit, but rarely the wrong call.
How to actually check before buying
Take a piece of string or a soft tape measure, wrap it around the neck at the point where you want the pendant to sit, and measure that circumference — that number, plus a little drop for however low you want the pendant itself to hang, is your target length. It takes less time than reading a size chart and removes almost all the guesswork.
Layering changes the maths
When you're building a stack rather than buying one piece, the goal isn't matching lengths — it's staggering them enough that each piece is visible on its own. A common, reliable formula: one choker-length piece, one at 18 inches, one at 22–24 inches. Each sits at a different point, so nothing overlaps or gets buried underneath the others.
