Can You Shower and Swim in Gold-Plated Jewellery? What Actually Works
If you've ever taken a ring off before a shower out of habit, you're not alone — and you're not wrong to be cautious. Most gold-plated jewellery genuinely isn't built to handle water, sweat, or chlorine. But some is. Here's the difference, and how to tell which kind you're wearing.
Why most gold-plated jewellery hates water
Standard gold plating is a thin layer of gold bonded to a base metal, usually brass or copper. That layer can be as little as 0.5 microns thick. Water itself isn't usually the direct enemy — it's what water carries and speeds up: oxidation of the base metal underneath, and the gradual breakdown of the plating bond when it's exposed to chlorine, salt, or the minerals in tap water. Over time, this shows up as tarnishing, discolouration, or the base metal peeking through.
What makes jewellery genuinely waterproof
Waterproof, in the way we use it, means the piece is plated thickly enough and finished in a way that resists that breakdown — not just "fine if it gets a bit wet," but built to be worn in the shower, the ocean, the pool, and through a workout without tarnishing or fading. Every piece in the Golden Hour collection is 18k gold-plated, tarnish-resistant, and hypoallergenic, specifically so you're not stuck choosing between wearing your jewellery and living your life.
So can you shower in it?
Yes. Showering, swimming in the ocean or a pool, sweating through a workout — all fine. The idea is that you shouldn't have to think about it, which is the entire point of waterproof jewellery in the first place.
What still shortens its life
Waterproof doesn't mean indestructible. A few things will wear any plated jewellery down faster, waterproof or not:
- Prolonged, direct contact with perfume, lotion, or hairspray — put jewellery on last, take it off first
- Abrasive contact, like gym equipment or manual work
- Harsh scrubbing when cleaning — a soft cloth and mild soap is all it needs
How to check what you're actually wearing
If a listing doesn't explicitly say waterproof, tarnish-resistant, or shower-safe, assume it isn't. Standard gold-plated and gold-filled pieces can still be beautiful, but they're built for occasional wear, not daily water exposure.
